The first time you run the MSDE Manager the program will check the registry and attempt to find any existing SQL Server connection information. If no servers are found you will need to follow these steps to register a server in the program.
Step 1 - Select a server group in the navigation pane

Step 2 - Click the New Server toolbar button

Step 3 - Enter Server details and click OK
See Registered Server Properties for more information about entering the server details.
Enter (local) in the Server Name box to register a
default local server.

You will then by able to select the server in the navigation pane. If the server is running, and the login is valid then a connection to the server will be made and the server details will appear:
